A jewelry cleaning cloth such as this “Silver, Gold and Platinum Jewelry Cleaning Cloth” really work.  My daughter was amazed at how a cloth cleaned up her inexpensive ’silver plated’ (I believe) necklace that she wore in a chlorinated pool.  Personally it looked to me like the silver coating had been removed but a few minutes of polishing with a cloth and it looked almost like new.
